Policy on Counting Animals Produced

Purpose
This policy outlines the expectations for counting animals produced. An accurate animal count is required to fulfill federal obligations for reporting animal numbers and to ensure compliance with Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) approved protocols.
Applicability
This policy is applicable to all animal activities conducted under the auspices of the University, and applies to all locations under the purview of the U-M IACUC.
Policy
All animals produced must be counted and recorded according to the expectations outlined in the table below. These expectations have been established by the IACUC to ensure animal distress is minimized and federal regulations for counting animals are met.

*Exact timelines vary between species.
Compliance
The provisions of this policy are under the direction and oversight of the U-M’s IACUC. The IACUC will, if necessary, suspend research or implement sanctions if policy infractions should occur.
