This policy outlines the expectations for counting animals produced. An accurate animal count is required to fulfill federal obligations for reporting animal use and to ensure compliance with Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) approved protocols.

  • Purpose

    This policy outlines the expectations for counting animals produced. An accurate animal count is required to fulfill federal obligations for reporting animal use and to ensure compliance with Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) approved protocols.

  • Applicability

    This policy is applicable to all animal activities conducted under the auspices of the University, and applies to all campus locations, including Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn.

  • Policy

    All animals produced must be counted and recorded according to the expectations outlined in the table below. These expectations have been established by the IACUC to ensure animal distress is minimized and federal regulations for counting animals are met.

    Rodents At weaning (if, prior to weaning, animals are found dead or euthanized for any reason they must also be counted) Barcode activation sheet
    Rabbits
    Larval Fish 7 days post-fertilization eRAM Non-traditional Acquisition Form

    All other species At birth, hatching, or first manipulation eRAM Non-traditional Acquisition Form

    *Exact timelines vary between species.
