Requesting Animal Containment Housing","legacy_section_text":"<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Prior to handling animals, caging, or equipment in a <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/containment-room\">containment room<\/a>, all personnel (ULAM and non-ULAM personnel) must attend the <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/institutional-animal-care-use-committee-iacuc\/\">IACUC<\/a>\/<a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/ulam\">ULAM<\/a>-required \"Hazard Containment\" courses.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Investigative personnel complete the\u00a0<em>Containment Housing Request Form (CHR) <\/em>within their eRAM protocol.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The ULAM husbandry supervisors responsible for the requested containment housing area will receive an electronic copy of the CHR Form.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Requests for containment housing must be made at the time when the animal order is submitted for animals ordered directly into containment housing, or at least 3 <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/business-days\">business days<\/a> before animals are placed in the containment room.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>ULAM Husbandry Supervisor Actions:\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-roman\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Reviews <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/environment-health-safety-ehs\">EHS<\/a>'s Safety Findings within the eRAM protocol when a laboratory requests to initiate a study in ULAM containment housing and directs any questions or discrepancies to EHS.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Confirm all investigative personnel needing access to containment housing have completed all required training classes.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Notify investigative personnel of containment room space availability including room number and combination for the containment housing room.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The ULAM Husbandry Supervisor completes <em>Biological\u00a0and\/or Chemical Substance Forms<\/em> for the designated containment procedure and animal housing room.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Refer to <em><strong>Appendix A<\/strong><\/em> if setting up a new containment housing room.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Access to containment rooms is limited to personnel who have completed the required training through the Training Core, facility orientation with ULAM husbandry personnel, and are required to conduct study or husbandry related functions.\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-roman\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>For ABSL 2 enhanced studies in rodents, there are additional considerations and restrictions than those outlined in this SOP. Containment Room Documentation","legacy_section_text":"<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Contact the ULAM husbandry supervisors for the animal facility to obtain the appropriate Room Entry Sign. General Considerations","legacy_section_text":"<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Unless otherwise directed in this document, animal care procedures should be performed as per <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/ulam\">ULAM<\/a> standard operating procedures.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Animals administered <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/hazardous-chemical\">hazardous chemicals<\/a>, <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/toxin\">toxins<\/a>, and\/or biological substances can be housed in the same <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/containment-room\">containment room<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Changing <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/personal-protective-equipment-ppe\/\">PPE<\/a> between <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/animal-housing-cubicle\">cubicles<\/a> within a suite is not required when personnel are performing only animal health checks; as long as no potentially contaminated equipment is manipulated and no animal cages are opened.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Husbandry personnel are required to change scrubs after working in a containment housing room if cages have been opened.\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>See\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"\/animalcare\/sops\/entry-and-exiting-animal-housing-areas\">Entry and Exiting Animal Housing Areas<\/a><\/em><\/strong> for more information.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Prior to manipulating cages, wipe the interior surface of the <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/biological-safety-cabinet-bsc\/\">BSC<\/a> with wet paper towel or something comparable to remove any organic debris present. Then sanitize the BSC with Clidox or a bleach\/water solution by wetting and then wiping the horizontal work surface as well as side and back walls with gloved hands<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Allow <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/disinfectant\">disinfectant<\/a> a 10-minute contact time before working in the BSC.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Do not mix bleach or Clidox with ammonia or acids.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Open and perform all cage manipulations within the BSC only.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Even within the BSC, two cages containing animals must not be opened at the same time. Consult the ULAM document,\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"\/animalcare\/sops\/room-sanitization-sop\">Room Sanitization SOP<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Discard pre-filters into the biological trash. Lightly mist the pre-filters with a <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/bleach\">bleach<\/a> solution or <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/clidox%C2%A9\">Clidox<\/a> prior to sweeping. Pre-filters should not be vacuumed unless a specially designed <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/hepa-filter\">HEPA<\/a> filtered vacuum is used.\u00a0Dispose of waste collected from the pre-filters as chemical trash.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>HEPA filters within the BSC must not be wetted or swept at any time. HEPA filters will be serviced or removed only by EHS.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>EHS performs annual certification of all BSCs. Hazardous Substance Administration and Equipment Decontamination","legacy_section_text":"<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Administer hazardous substances in the BSC only.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Perform animal perfusions using proper ventilation such as downdraft tables or within the BSC.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Use only hypodermic needles and syringes for injection or aspiration of fluids from laboratory animals and diaphragm bottles.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Use a needle-locking syringe\u00a0or disposable needle\/syringe units (i.e., the needle is integral to the syringe) for injections or aspiration of hazardous substances.\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-roman\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Do not bend, shear or replace needles in the needle cap or guard.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Do not remove the needle from the syringe following use.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Place the uncapped needle and syringe in a puncture-resistant container (sharps container).<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a class=\"gtip\" href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/decontaminate\/\">Decontaminate<\/a> or discard equipment immediately after use and before removal from the <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/containment-room\/\">containment room<\/a>. Rats must be placed back into 1800 cages when returned to the containment housing room. See <em><a href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/informational\/maximum-housing-densities-for-mouse-cages\/\"><strong>Maximum Housing Densities for Mouse Cages<\/strong><\/a> <\/em>and<em> for <a href=\"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/informational\/maximum-housing-densities-for-rat-cages\/\"><strong>Rat Cages<\/strong><\/a><\/em> for how many rats can be placed in a #3 rat cage for transport.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Place a dissolvable sticker on the housing cage appropriate for the type of hazard administered and wipe the outside of the cage with a suitable disinfectant within the <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/biological-safety-cabinet-bsc\">BSC<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Leave all dirty caging in the containment room\/<a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/animal-housing-cubicle\">cubicle<\/a> covered with a plastic bag or with a micro-isolation filter lid covering the cage parts.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Secure cages in which animals are being transported (e.g., rubber bands stretched over cage top and bottom, tape wrapped around the cage top and bottom).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Place housing cages in a rigid, sealed, secondary transport container.\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Place a sufficient amount of absorbent material in the secondary transport container prior to movement.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Avoid public passenger elevators when possible.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Wipe outside of cage\u00a0with a suitable disinfectant before transporting\u00a0back to the housing room.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Wipe any carts used during transport with an appropriate <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/disinfectant\">disinfectant<\/a> following transport.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Place secondary transport containers in the containment room (or appropriate location in BSRB cage wash) following transport for routine cage wash sanitizing.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If a spill occurs in the secondary transport container, see <em><strong>Standard Husbandry and Substance Administration Practices Section 13.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Decontaminating housing cages\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: decimal\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Secure the cage (e.g., rubber bands stretched over cage top and bottom, tape wrapped around the cage top and bottom) to prevent a loss of contents.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Return empty housing cages to the original <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/animalcare\/glossary\/containment-room\">containment room<\/a> for proper processing.\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\" start=\"1\">\r\n \t<li>Except in BSRB, these cages should never be placed directly into a cage wash facility. At the time of use, each barrel must be appropriately labeled with a hazardous waste label and indicate the type of hazard it contains.
