{"id":2586,"date":"2018-08-13T06:22:40","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T06:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/q-fever\/"},"modified":"2024-11-25T21:46:51","modified_gmt":"2024-11-25T21:46:51","slug":"q-fever","status":"publish","type":"glossary","link":"https:\/\/az.research.umich.edu\/animalcare\/glossary\/q-fever\/","title":{"rendered":"Q Fever"},"template":"","class_list":["post-2586","glossary","type-glossary","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":{"glossary_term_description":"Most herds and flocks in the USA are infected with\u00a0<em>Coxiella <\/em><em>burnetii<\/em>, the bacterium that causes Q fever.\r\n<ul class=\"rteindent1\">\r\n \t<li>While there is a low risk of exposure from healthy cattle, sheep or goats, the highest risk of exposure to Q fever is from placental membranes, birthing fluids, and fetuses from infected sheep, goats, and cattle.\r\n<ul class=\"rteindent1\">\r\n \t<li>The bacteria can become airborne, particularly during births and cleaning of birthing areas.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In most individuals, the disease manifests itself as a\u00a0flu-like illness that resolves in 10-14 days.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffcb05\">Women of child-bearing age or who are pregnant should be aware that this bacterium may cause miscarriage or other problems with the human fetus.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffcb05\">Employees should report occupational exposure to their physician if clinical signs of illness are noted.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Rarely, a person may develop a chronic infection with the Q fever organism.
