Federal regulations and U-M policies that protect the <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/medschool\/glossary\/privacy\">privacy<\/a> of patients and <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/medschool\/glossary\/research\">research<\/a> subjects apply to both the creation and the use of research repositories.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ohrp\/regulations-and-policy\/guidance\/issues-to-consider-in-use-of-stored-data-or-tissues\/index.html\">Federal guidance<\/a>\u00a0calls for <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/medschool\/glossary\/institutional-review-board-irb\">IRB<\/a> review of repository storage and data management.\r\n\r\nA repository is a collection of data\/biospecimens whose organizers\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>May receive data\/biospecimens from multiple sources<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Maintain the data\/biospecimens over time<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Control access to and use of data\/biospecimens by multiple individuals and\/or for multiple purposes, which may evolve over time.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","button_links":null,"related_content":[757,747,772,880,844],"legacy_path":"repository-overview","legacy_node_id":277,"legacy_related_nids":"299, 288, 314, 266, 1470, 402","legacy_content_section":[{"legacy_section_type":"heading","legacy_heading":"Repository Oversight at U-M","legacy_subheading":"","legacy_section_text":"","legacy_media_position":"","legacy_media_file":"","legacy_media_url":"","legacy_glossary_term":"","legacy_glossary_nids":"","legacy_resource":"","legacy_resource_nids":"","legacy_buttons":null},{"legacy_section_type":"text_area","legacy_heading":"","legacy_subheading":"","legacy_section_text":"Researchers at U-M have established many repositories with a wealth of data and available specimens.\u00a0 The University is committed to facilitating existing and new repositories to support <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/medschool\/glossary\/research\">research<\/a> and to promote the effective use of University resources, consistent with the Medical School's Strategic Research Initiative.\r\n\r\nTo this end, a \u201cREP\u201d application in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/its.umich.edu\/academics-research\/research\/eresearch\/regulatory-management\">eResearch Regulatory Management\u00a0<\/a>(eRRM) system facilitates oversight of repositories.\u00a0 This supplements the existing \"HUM\" application for oversight of <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"\/medschool\/glossary\/human-subject-0\">human subjects<\/a>\u00a0research studies. This includes courses on human subjects protection.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>EHS <a class=\"gtip\" href=\"https:\/\/ehs.umich.edu\/research-clinical\/\">Research Health &amp; Safety<\/a>\u00a0(RH&amp;S) promotes research safety and assures sound laboratory management.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>UMHS resources<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/michmed-medicalschool.policystat.com\/policy\/5508111\/latest\/\">UMMS Research Biorepositories Policy<\/a> (available through <a href=\"https:\/\/michmed-medicalschool.policystat.com\/\">PolicyStat<\/a>)<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medresearch.umich.edu\/office-research\/about-office-research\/our-units\/central-biorepository\">UMHS\u00a0Central Biorepository<\/a>\u00a0provides\u00a0a standardized,\u00a0safe and monitored environment for the processing, storage and distribution of high-quality normal and diseased biospecimens annotated with detailed clinical and laboratory data.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medresearch.umich.edu\/office-research\/about-office-research\/our-units\/data-office-clinical-translational-research\">UMMS Data Office for Clinical and Translational Research<\/a>\u00a0serves as a\r\ncommon\u00a0portal for researchers to request and gain access to electronic health record data for use in research.
